1. Do I need previous ATV experience for the Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour?
No previous ATV experience is normally required. Before starting the ride, you will receive basic instructions and a safety briefing. You should still feel comfortable controlling an ATV on unpaved mountain roads.
2. How much of the Rainbow Mountain route is done by ATV?
The ATV section covers approximately 15 km each way, for about 30 km round trip. After reaching Qosqopata, there is a final hike of around 30 minutes to the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint.
3. Do the ATVs go all the way to Rainbow Mountain?
No. The ATV ride takes you close to Rainbow Mountain, but the final section must be completed on foot. From Qosqopata, the walk to the viewpoint takes approximately 30 minutes.
4. Is the Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour easier than the regular hiking tour?
Yes, the ATV option significantly reduces the amount of walking compared with the traditional Rainbow Mountain trek. However, the final hike is still at very high altitude, so it can feel physically demanding even though it is relatively short.
5. Do I need to acclimatize before this tour?
Yes. Rainbow Mountain is located above 5,000 meters, so spending at least one or two days in Cusco or another high-altitude destination before the tour is strongly recommended. High altitude can make even a short walk feel more demanding.
6. What is included in the Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour?
The tour includes transportation, entrance ticket, breakfast, lunch, professional guide, ATV and fuel, helmet, rain poncho, first-aid kit and emergency oxygen, according to the current program.
7. What should I wear for the Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour?
Wear warm layers, comfortable hiking shoes, a waterproof outer layer, sunglasses, sunscreen and gloves. Temperatures can change quickly at high altitude, and mornings are usually cold even during the dry season.
8. What time does the Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour return to Cusco?
The tour returns to Cusco at approximately 6:00 p.m. However, the exact time may vary depending on traffic, weather conditions, the group’s pace and road conditions.
9. Is breakfast and lunch included?
Yes. The tour includes a buffet breakfast during the outbound journey and lunch before returning to Cusco.
